The Only Calendar I Can Read From the Sidewalk. 🌝

Looking up

I walk my dogs every night. Luna and Geppetto.

And every night I look up and find the moon.

Yes, I named my dog Luna. I've loved the moon forever, way before the dog.

Some nights it comes up orange. Sometimes pink, or this dusty red that never looks right in photos no matter how many times I try. The dogs just stand there waiting. They know the drill.

And somehow this little habit became the best planning tool I have. Which is funny, because I'm only out there so two dogs can pee.

Here's how it works.

When I'm working on something, the moon fills up a little more every night. It doesn't care if I opened my planner or not. It just keeps going. Some nights I look up and think, okay, I'm further along than I thought. Other nights it reminds me that the thing I've been avoiding for two weeks isn't going to finish itself.

When it's almost full, that's my sign to wrap things up. Finish it. Stop carrying it around.

And then it starts over. That's the part I need most. New moon means clean slate. There's nothing up there, so I get to begin again. I don't have to earn it or wait for January.

A calendar can't do that for me. A month ends because the grid says so. December 31 doesn't look like anything.

The moon is the only calendar I can read from the sidewalk.

And if you pull a card on a new moon, I get it. I pull cards too. I have stood in my kitchen chanting Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha at a problem while a dog watched me. Do I think the moon cares about my inbox? No. But sometimes you need a reason to start and permission to be done. If the sky hands those out twice a month, I'll take it.

So that's my whole practice. Two dogs, a sidewalk, and the moon telling me where I am.

Some nights it's very pink and I just stand there.
